The Histroy of the Old Catholic Church

Presented by Dom Donald M. Weeks, OSB

Retired Old Catholic Bishop/Abbot

Introduction

Professor Von DollingerIf one were to question: Where did the Old Catholic Church start? The answer would be with men like Professors von Dollinger and von Schulte. After Vatican I, several scholars and scientific men met in Munich, Germany in what was called the first Old Catholic Congress. These men did not agree with papal pronouncements issued by PP IX and they aimed to set the record straight.

Pictured to the left is Professor Von Dollinger.

That is what this webpage is about: setting the record straight! At the present time there is no accurate history of the Old Catholic Church and what history that there is, is rather distorted.

To begin with, the Old Catholic Church was not established by Saint Willibord or by bishops of Utrecht, Holland. While the Roman Catholic Church of Holland had their dispute with Rome, there dispute had nothing to do with the founding of Old Catholicism, Anything but the truth is pure conjecture. The Old Catholic Church started with the Congress of Munich in 1871.

In the following pages and links you will be able to study the historic founding of the OCC and read many of the documents from that era.
